![]() ![]() Select the File System (usually NTFS) in the dialog that appears and enter the Allocation Unit Size (usually 4096) and check Perform a quick format. In the list of Devices and Drives, right-click the drive you’d like to format and select Format in the menu that appears. In any File Explorer window, browse to This PC. Or you can right-click the Start button and select File Explorer. If the drive had a previous name and that makes sense for you, by all means, keep it. You can usually do this by clicking the folder icon in your taskbar. In the Volume label textbox, enter whatever name you'd like to give to the drive. Choose the disk you’d like to format, right-click and select Format. The first of several formatting details which we'll cover over the next several steps is the volume label, which is essentially a name given to the hard drive. You'll see the MacOS Utilities window choose "Disk Utility." Now you can choose to erase your startup drive, and choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as the operating system. In the pop-up window, choose the file system you want to use. To format a hard drive on your Mac, follow these instructions: Turn on your Macintosh notebook computer or desktop system and login. Select the hard drive that you want to wipe and click on the Wipe Disk feature from the left pane.
